What is transvaginal scan (TVS)?

The term ‘transvaginal’ refers to an internal exam from the vagina. TVS probes have incredible resolution and are especially useful in early pregnancy to confirm viability, location, heartbeat, and to assess the uterus, cervix and ovaries.

Technically, pregnancy examination using TVS is the same as gynaecological ultrasound. Special high resolution probe is cleaned aseptically, wrapped with sterile cover (similar to condom) and sterile lubricating gel. It is worth mentioning, if you are allergic to latex, because in case of allergic patients we will use latex-free probe covers.

The person doing transvaginal scan during pregnancy must possess extremely high level of experience and expertise. TVS should always be performed by experienced gynaecologists to ensure accuracy and patient comfort.

TVS scan is not necessary and you can opt against this kind of test. Here we will tell you the drawback of transabdominal scan in your situation. Please note that we never provide you TVS in the scenario where we are able to get enough information regarding your baby and pregnancy using transabdominal scan.

Please note that you must empty your bladder straight away before the transvaginal scan. Small amounts of urine in the bladder will alter the shape of the womb and will lower the quality of image.

What type of symptoms could suggest a need for a transvaginal scan?

  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Unexplained pelvic pain
  • Problems becoming pregnant (infertility issues)
  • Abnormal discharge from the vagina
  • Monitoring of cysts on the ovaries or fibroids
  • Complications of early pregnancy, including pain or bleeding
  • Bleeding after the menopause
  • Suspected ectopic pregnancy

When it is necessary to do TVS?

  • Early pregnancy viability scan
  • Cervical length measurement
  • Vasa previa screening
  • Evaluation of the placenta for defects
  • Evaluation of the scar post-C-section
  • Other special cases

Price for Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan

Price £350

In order to have a more complete picture of a woman’s reproductive organs, an ultrasound scanning transducer (thin wand) may be inserted into the vagina, covered with a sterile sheath and lubricated with gel, under the careful guidance of a gynaecologist. TVS is often used to investigate ovarian cysts or masses, which may require further tests to determine whether they are benign or malignant.

Why is a transvaginal ultrasound done?

Transvaginal ultrasound is most commonly employed to diagnose and follow up on conditions associated with female reproductive system like pelvic pain, infertility, abnormal ovarian cysts, vaginal bleeding and evaluation of early pregnancy.

How does a transvaginal ultrasound differ from a standard pelvic ultrasound?

This ultrasound gives a closer and more detailed picture of the pelvic organs than an ordinary pelvic ultrasound, which is taken externally over the abdomen.

What should I prepare for an ultrasound?

In accordance with the particular test, you will usually be asked to empty your bladder just before the scan. It is important to adhere to your health care professional’s instructions regarding preparation.

How long will this ultrasound take?

The test will generally take around 15 to 30 minutes, although it may take longer depending on the exact reasons for the examination.

Will a transvaginal ultrasound show conditions other than reproductive system conditions?

Will I be able to feel the sound waves of the ultrasound?

No, you will only feel the probe touching your skin.

Are there any side effects from radiation with ultrasounds?

No, ultrasounds do not produce any radiation which can cause harm.

You will generally need to take some clothing off, and depending on where you are getting scanned, you might be asked to put on a hospital gown.

When can I view my results?

Your gynaecologist will explain the findings during your appointment and provide a written report, usually within 24 hours.

What if I require a referral to see a gynaecologist?
